Glossary

Biochar

A charcoal-like material made by heating organic matter without oxygen (pyrolysis). Added to soil to improve its health and sequester carbon.

Carbon Credits

A purchasable reduction, avoidance, or removal of emissions to compensate for GHGs elsewhere. One carbon credit represents an emission reduction or removal of one metric ton of CO2 or the equivalent amount of GHGs.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

A colorless and odorless gas produced by burning carbon and organic compounds, as well as by respiration. Naturally present in the air and absorbed by plants through photosynthesis. A common greenhouse gas.

Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e)

A standard unit used to measure the impact of different greenhouse gases on climate change. Expresses the warming potential of various gases (like methane or nitrous oxide) in terms of the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide. Allows all emissions to be compared using a single, consistent metric.

Carbon Footprint

The amount of greenhouse gases emitted by something or someone during a given period of time. Carbon Inset A greenhouse gas reduction that takes place within a company's own supply chain. Helps companies reduce their emissions by making improvements directly tied to their own operations, such as adopting regenerative farming or cleaner production methods.

Carbon Inset

A greenhouse gas reduction that takes place within a company's own supply chain. Helps companies reduce their emissions by making improvements directly tied to their own operations, such as adopting regenerative farming or cleaner production methods.

Carbon Offset

Credits purchased from outside projects to balance a company's emissions.

Carbon Sequestration

The process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere in a solid or dissolved form. This can occur biologically, geologically, or technologically. Regenerative agriculture sequesters carbon in the soil, which is a biological process.

Compost

A mixture of organic ingredients used as plant fertilizer. Commonly prepared by decomposing plants and food waste, compost enriches soil health and reduces food waste.

Culled Fruit

Non-marketable or damaged fruit. While CMI’s culled fruit may not make it to the grocery store, it serves other important purposes at The Soil Center®.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG)

A gas, such as carbon dioxide or methane, that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation.

Regenerative Agriculture

A holistic farming approach that aims to restore and enhance the natural resilience of agroecosystems while supporting the long-term health and viability of agricultural businesses and communities. The foundation of this farming system is the integrated management of soil health, biodiversity, water resources, human health, and climate.

Worm Castings

One of the richest soil amendments naturally produced. Essentially worm poop, worm castings are the result of earthworms processing organic matter.
