Glossary
-
Biochar is a charcoal-like material made by heating organic matter without oxygen (pyrolysis). It is added to soil to improve its health and sequester carbon. Some of CMI’s woody waste from orchards is turned into biochar.
-
A purchasable reduction, avoidance, or removal of emissions to compensate for GHG’s elsewhere. One carbon credit represents an emission reduction or removal of one metric ton of CO2 or the equivalent amount of GHGs.
-
A colorless and odorless gas produced by burning carbon and organic compounds and by respiration. It is naturally present in the air and is absorbed by plants in photosynthesis. It is a common greenhouse gas.
-
Carbon dioxide equivalent or CO2e is a standard unit used to measure the impact of different greenhouse gases on climate change. It expresses the warming potential of various gases (like methane or nitrous oxide) in terms of the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide. This allows all emissions to be compared using a single, consistent metric.
-
A measure of the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by something or someone during a given period.
-
A greenhouse gas reduction that takes place within a company's own supply chain. Unlike offsets, which are typically purchased from external projects, insets help companies reduce their emissions by making improvements directly tied to their own operations, such as adopting regenerative farming or cleaner production methods.
-
The process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere in a solid or dissolved form. Carbon sequestration can occur biologically, geologically, or technologically. Regenerative agriculture sequester carbon in the soil, which is a biological process.
-
A mixture of organic ingredients used as plant fertilizer. Commonly prepared by decomposing plants and food waste, compost enriches soil health and reduces food waste. CMI’s culled fruit gets turned into compost at The Soil Center.
-
Non-marketable or damaged fruit. While CMI’s culled fruit may not make it to the grocery store, it does serve other important purposes at The Soil Center.
-
A gas, such as carbon dioxide or methane that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation.
-
A holistic farming approach that aims to restore and enhance the natural resilience of agroecosystems while supporting the long-term health and viability of agricultural businesses and communities. The foundation of this farming system is the integrated management of soil health, biodiversity, water resources, human health, and climate.
-
Essentially worm poop, worm castings are the result of earthworms processing organic matter. Worm castings are a natural soil amendment that help support soil health. At The Soil Center worm farm, worm castings are created using CMI’s woody orchard waste, and liquid manure from Royal Family Farming.
